Label
Bennett Hall, Billerica, Massachusetts
Note
Inscription on inside cover reads : "To Samuel Holden Lovejoy from his great-aunt Gladys Eleanor Holden [Howser?], Concord, September 1949"This bound collection of photographic plates depicts the former Billerica homestead known as Bennett Hall, once the home of Joshua and Eleanor Bennett. Joshua Bennett came to Billerica in 1821. Bennett Hall was located on Long Street, which is currently Boston Road (Rt. 3A), at the location where Boston Road intersects with Good Street, near the current Town Hall. The Bennetts owned multiple properties in Billerica, including this homestead consisting of Bennett Hall and 42 acres of land on the west side of Boston Road, just north of the center of town. A photo montage of Joshua Bennett, his grandson Joshua Bennett Holden (son of Ellen Bennett Holden), and his great-grandson Joshua Bennett Holden, Jr. is on the first page. Bennett Hall was constructed sometime between 1820 and 1860. Joshua Bennett Holden, Jr. inherited the estate in 1892, after the death of his great-grandmother Eleanor Bennett in 1891. After it was no longer used as a residence by the Bennett family, it was known as a country bed-and-breakfast called the Johnny Cake Inn. The inn was run by Mary H. Hubbard. The property was razed ca. 1956
